His View Is Frivolous

Trying to remain relevant, Michael Moore has now resumed his writing. I pointed out the other day I have not seen any of Moore’s movies. Criticism of his work revolves around his taking things out of context, distorting the truth, and leaving out pertinent information. Having read his entry for today (I fear that this will be moved or deleted at some point in the future), I now understand the criticism.

There IS some good news from Tuesday’s election. Here are 17 reasons not to slit your wrists:

One has to appreciate the melodrama. Nevertheless, I read through the list.

3. The only age group in which the majority voted for Kerry was young adults (Kerry: 54%, Bush: 44%), proving once again that your parents are always wrong and you should never listen to them.

Since Moore is older than I am, does that mean he is always wrong? I understand he’s trying to be humorous, but it places his entire viewpoint as frivolous. I suppose that is it.

7. Once again we are reminded that the buckeye is a nut, and not just any old nut — a poisonous nut. A great nation was felled by a poisonous nut. May Ohio State pay dearly this Saturday when it faces Michigan.

Moore, despite his schtick, is a businessman. He hawks his movies, his books, his merchandise. Insulting an entire state is not good business.

17. Finally and most importantly, over 55 million Americans voted for the candidate dubbed “The #1 Liberal in the Senate.” That’s more than the total number of voters who voted for either Reagan, Bush I, Clinton or Gore. Again, more people voted for Kerry than Reagan. If the media are looking for a trend it should be this — that so many Americans were, for the first time since Kennedy, willing to vote for an out-and-out liberal. The country has always been filled with evangelicals — that is not news. What IS news is that so many people have shifted toward a Massachusetts liberal. In fact, that’s BIG news. Which means, don’t expect the mainstream media, the ones who brought you the Iraq War, to ever report the real truth about November 2, 2004. In fact, it’s better that they don’t. We’ll need the element of surprise in 2008.

Here Moore shows how he manipulates numbers. It is true that Kerry had more votes than Reagan. There are also many more millions of people in the US now than when Reagan ran.

According to the United States Census Bureau, there are currently 294,687,231 people in the States. In 1980, there were 227,259,000 people. That’s 67,000,000 more folks living in the country.

According to the US Census Bureau, in 1980, 93,100,000 people voted in the national election. In 1984, 101,900,000 people voted.

CNN reports that 115,809,878 people voted in the 2004 election earlier this week.

In 1980, Reagan won the election against Carter and Anderson with 50.7% of the popular vote (489 EVs). The challenger had 43,901,812 votes.

In 1984, Reagan won against Mondale with 58.8% of the vote (525 EVs). The president had 54,455,000 votes.

Again, according to CNN, Kerry garnered 55,949,407 votes on Tuesday. So, yes, he had more votes than Reagan did in any election, but it hardly equates to the same story. Reagan’s 54,000,000+ votes in 1984 was the largest landslide ever.

Moore’s comparison holds no water. Indeed, it and he are frivolous.

7. Once again we are reminded that the buckeye is a nut, and not just any old nut — a poisonous nut. A great nation was felled by a poisonous nut. May Ohio State pay dearly this Saturday when it faces Michigan.

The above was point #7 of Moore’s uninformed screed. Unfortunately, Moore shows how out of touch he is; Ohio did not play Michigan today, rather, it played Michigan State. Big difference in Big 10 football! I suppose Moore will claim he was speaking about Big 10 soccer.
