Who Is Your Favorite Baseball Player of All Time?

Elvis, a poster at BaseballTruth.com asked the above on 2 March 2005.

My response was:

For me it has always been Roberto Clemente. I was a boy just getting into baseball at the end of Clemente’s career. Dad had always been a Pirates fan. He told me Clemente was a very good player. He admired how he played the game. For a boy, that is all it took. Clemente was immediately my favorite player and has remained so. Every so often I catch some of the 1970 Series on ESPN Classic. It is fun to see him play.

The Vet had just opened and my parents took my best friend and me to our very first baseball game. That first night for David and me was a twi-night doubleheader. Four Hall of Famers played that night: Bill Mazeroski, Willie Stargell, Jim Bunning, and Roberto Clemente.

With autograph book in hand, I rushed to the rail, once I was given the go-ahead from my folks. Clemente, Stargell, and some others were stretching and chatting along the third base line. I called for Clemente to sign the book. It was the first time I ever heard someone speak Spanish. He refused. 🙁

Dad still liked him and this little boy did what his Dad did.
