Financial Help Requested

How much can one spend (not a gift for the spouse) without discussing it with the spouse?

Just curious . . .

  1. At my house, any amount is okay. We trust each other and don’t ASK permission for any expenditures. However, we do communicate and, while there is no prescribed level, I’d say we share our intentions for amounts over $100.

I wouldn’t buy a major appliance or a car without discussions. Nor would I register for a class or commit family time or resources for a child without discussions. After talking about my intentions though, I’d feel completely comfortable making the decisions without further approval. For instance, if we discussed buying a new kitchen table, I’d be okay with selecting it all on my own after we agreed that we’d be buying something.
