Death by Chocolate Lab (Lucky Paws Petsitting Mystery #1)Death by Chocolate Lab by Bethany Blake
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This was the August read for my cozy mystery book club. While most of the participants enjoyed the story, I was left underwhelmed. It is not that it was horrible. I understand what cozies are as I read enough of them. For me, while I enjoyed Daphne (the main character who is flighty) and the dogs, particularly Socrates, the writing style did not suit me.

As soon as a character entered the realm of suspect, the author dealt with him and dismissed him. By the end, there were only a couple characters left who could have been the murderer and each was a reach. The actual murderer, I do not believe could have been suspected by the reader.

Towards the end, I was hoping it was going to be a character who the cozy genre never permits to be involved. Had it been that character, I probably would have loved this. 🙂

Standard set-up for a cozy. Someone gave away what became of the rottweilers in the second book. 😉 While I haven’t read that (and am quite unlikely to do so), if what was reported was true, I think it was a mistake on the part of the author.

Anyhow, it was read. Enjoyed the philosophy tie-ins.
