Bar Direction

Over the years I have noted I am a completist. When I collected baseball cards, the task was to complete the set. Same with collecting live shows: complete the tour. GoeTours has the same the feature: a set course that presents a challenge to be completed.

Before there was the movie Julie & Julia, I read some of Julie Powell’s blog when she was working her way through Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. I thought about recreating that myself, but soon disabused myself of the idea. Over the years, I have toyed with that concept for other cookbooks. I did not follow through with any.

My thought with the bar was to play around with classic cocktails. There’s a lot out there. Most of the known players have ventured well past the classics as content needs to continue to be posted. While what they are currently posting is interesting, I am still in the infancy of my learning. I want to explore the classics more.

I’ve come to an approach I think will work well for me. I found the International Bartenders Association list of cocktails. As I have bopped around, I keep coming back to this as my staple to see how far afield some of the online mixologists veer from the standard.

Well, if I am considering the IBA the standard, why not work through their cocktails? And that is what I plan to do.

I am beginning with what it refers to as The Unforgettables. Interestingly, there are a couple I have never heard of before (can you hear me Brandy Crusta and Monkey Gland?).

Being who I am, I plan on doing this alphbetically. It’s possible I will deviate from that, but that is at least how I will begin.

I am looking forward to the journey!
